Cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons and other health care professionals focus their expertise on diagnosing and treating a variety of heart problems using the latest equipment and technologies. Board-certified cardiovascular surgeons and interventional cardiologists perform a variety of procedures including coronary artery bypass graft (CABG or open heart surgery), stent placement, valve replacement and repair, intervention for congestive heart failure and thoracic aortic surgery to repair aneurysms and perform aortic dissections. Post-surgery patients are cared for in the Critical Care Unit and later in the step-down unit.
Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization
Medical Center of McKinney offers complete diagnostic resources including two cardiac procedures suites where diagnostic cardiac catheterizations (cardiac caths) are performed. During the procedure, the physician determines the extent of heart disease and what other treatments such as angioplasty, insertion of a stent or heart surgery might be needed.
Other Cardiac Diagnostic Services
A comprehensive array of diagnostic services is available at Medical Center of McKinney. These services include a Stress Lab, 64-slice CT scanner, nuclear medicine studies, EKG, Echo and Heart Failure Center.
These and similar tests are usually ordered to assist your physician with diagnosing heart disease. Diagnostic testing is usually done on an outpatient basis.
Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)
PTCA is performed to open blocked coronary arteries caused by coronary artery disease and to restore blood flow to the heart tissue without open heart surgery. PTCAs are performed in cardiac procedure suites at Medical Center of McKinney. The advancement of the treatment of heart disease has recently enabled physicians to refine the PTCA procedure by introducing the placement of a stent. A stent is a tiny, expandable metal coil that is inserted into the coronary artery . The stent expands and helps keep the artery from narrowing or closing again. Newer stents are coated with medication to prevent the formation of scar tissue inside the stent. The patient’s physician will determine if a stent needs to be used and if that stent should be drug-eluding.
Chest Pain Center
Each year hundreds of patients come to Medical Center of McKinney's Emergency Department with chest pain. If a patient is experiencing a heart attack or similar episode he/she will immediately be seen by a cardiologist who may send him/her to the Chest Pain Center for further evaluation or to the catheterization lab for an interventional procedure.
After being evaluated by a medical professional, many of these patients are admitted to MCM's certified Chest Pain Center for extensive evaluation and determination of the best course of treatment. The focus of the Center is to streamline the time required for identifying and treating cardiac disease. Open around the clock, 365 days a year, the Chest Pain Center is staffed by a dedicated team of nurse practitioners and ED nurses under the direction of a board-certified cardiologist. Patients may be discharged and asked to follow up with their physician. Others may be admitted to the hospital.
