Joint Replacement
For many north Texans, the dawn of a new day means dealing with life-style limiting pain and decreased mobility from injured or worn-out joints including knees, hips, elbows and shoulders.
These orthopedic problems can be caused by previous injuries, degenerative conditions such as arthritis or chronic illnesses. The Medical Center of McKinney Center for Joint Replacement offers the latest treatment options to help them resume healthy, active lifestyles.
The Center for Joint Replacement features highly-trained physician specialists who have performed hundreds of joint replacement surgeries. From partial replacements to total joint replacements, from minimally invasive procedures using laparoscopic techniques to traditional open procedures, each orthopedic patient receives the treatment and care that is best for him or her.
A large percentage of the joint replacement procedures performed at The Medical Center of McKinney use minimally invasive equipment and techniques. These procedures are designed to get the patient back to his or her normal state of health as quickly as possible, generally with less pain than traditional methods.
Within a few hours of surgery most patients begin their rehabilitation with specially-trained physical and occupational therapists. This rapid rehabilitation approach helps with recovery, increases flexibility and strength and restores joint movement and muscle strength.
The orthopedic care unit is staffed by nursing specialists who coordinate and monitor daily post-operative care. Registered dietitians work closely with the team and the patient to ensure appropriate nourishment. A case manager is assigned to each joint replacement patient to help him or her and the family plan for discharge and post-hospital care.
Generally joint replacement surgery patients spend just a few days in the hospital before returning home for continued recovery and rehabilitation. The Medical Center of McKinney recognizes that the care plan for many patients suffering from orthopedic problems doesn’t end with a hospitalization. That’s why we provide outpatient rehabilitation, education and support groups as a part of the patient’s overall treatment.
Medical Center of McKinney’s Center for Joint Replacement is a Center of Excellence and has received certification through The Joint Commission and designated a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas.
