Texas Ten Step Program

We are a proud member of the Texas Ten Step Program!

Texas 10 Step Program LogoThe Texas Ten Step (TTS) Program was developed by the Texas Department of Health (now the Texas Department of State Health Services) in collaboration with The Texas Hospital Association in 1999. It is designed to help hospitals and birthing centers support mothers in breastfeeding before, during and after delivery, with a goal of having 82% of all new mothers breastfeeding at discharge. The TTS designation is awarded to facilities that are in 85% compliance with the WHO / UNICEF 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and are designated as Texas Mother-Friendly Worksites.

The Texas Medical Association endorses the Texas Ten Step Program as a method to improve maternity care practices surrounding breastfeeding and as a springboard to becoming a Baby- Friendly facility. The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, (BFHI) is a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for infant feeding. TTS facilities are located throughout Texas and are committed to staff breastfeeding education, breastfeeding support and promotion. The TTS program encourages designees to continue forward in their pursuit of the BFHI designation furthering their commitment to breastfeeding mothers and infants across Texas.
